Passage

PINE / PASSAGE

What is changing?

Every enterprise reaches a passage before it reaches a new horizon.

Passage is the transfer of value and of shares: the dimension through which The Pine reads the transitions that shape an enterprise across generations.

Some changes arrive as decisions. Others begin as tensions, silences, questions or movements that have not yet found a name.

A succession, a new role, a change in ownership, a founder stepping back, a family dividing its attention, or an enterprise becoming larger than the structures that once held it: each is a passage.

Portolan does not prescribe a route before understanding the terrain. It begins by observing what is changing, what is becoming possible and what can no longer remain unresolved.

A passage is not a pause

A passage is the interval between one form and the next.

It can be uncomfortable because the old arrangement is no longer sufficient, while the new one has not yet become stable.

In family enterprises, this interval often carries several dimensions at once: business performance, family identity, authority, trust and the future of ownership.

The task is not to accelerate change indiscriminately. The task is to understand its direction.

The questions beneath the question

Before a decision can be governed, the question beneath it must be recognised.

  • What is changing in the enterprise?
  • What is changing in the family?
  • Which responsibilities are moving?
  • Which expectations remain unspoken?
  • What must be preserved?
  • What must be released?
  • What is ready to begin?
  • What is not yet ready to be decided?

Passage in practice

In a mandate, Passage may concern:

  • a generational transition
  • the transfer of authority from founder to next generation
  • the separation of family, ownership and management roles
  • the arrival of a new shareholder or partner
  • the integration of a new business
  • the need to redefine the purpose of the enterprise
  • a strategic decision that has been postponed
  • the recognition that continuity requires transformation

Portolan helps turn these movements into a field of attention. It records what emerges, clarifies what matters and prepares the ground for a decision that can be sustained.

What The Pine brings

The Pine brings a human and strategic perspective to the passage.

We work across the visible and invisible dimensions of change: structures, decisions, relationships, language, authority and time.

The objective is not simply to move from one generation to another or from one organisational model to the next. It is to make the transition legible, governable and capable of becoming a source of continuity.

A passage becomes a direction when it is named.

Begin with what is changing

The Assessment is the first passage into the method of The Pine. It creates the space to identify what is moving, what requires attention and what question should guide the next conversation.
